VINCENT HAD OPENED all the windows in the tiny cabin in an unsuccessful attempt to get some cross-ventilation. Janice sat in the wooden rocker, staring out at the almost still bayou that ran in front of the cabin and fanning herself with an old, yellowed fishing magazine.

Though almost two hours had passed, she and Vincent hadn’t spoken since their confrontation in the bathroom. There was nothing left to say. She leaned back and closed her eyes, not wanting to sleep even though her eyelids felt as if they weighed two tons.

Her cell phone rang. She jumped up and raced to the table to get it, but Vincent beat her to it. She checked the ID over his shoulder. Out of area.

“Answer it,” he said, passing it to her. “If it’s Tyrone or one of his lackeys, hand it to me and let me handle them.”

She nodded and punched the Receive button. “Hello.”

“Good morning, Candy.”

The voice was male, husky, low, as if he were her lover. Janice went weak. “Tyrone.”

“Yes, it’s me. How nice of you to remember. Kelly sends her regards. She’s such a pretty young lady, the way you used to be.”

Reluctantly and with shaking hands, Janice passed the phone to Vincent.

Vincent took the phone from Janice. “I think I’m the one you want to talk to, Tyrone.”

“As a matter of fact, you are,” Tyrone answered, his voice taunting. “I was just telling Candy what a charming daughter you two have. It does surprise me how quickly you talked Candy into running away with you, though. According to the news, the police are amazed, as well. That would make them hot on your trail, but it certainly makes this convenient for me.”

“If you hurt Kelly, I’ll kill you. Not quick and painless, cousin, but slow and torturous until you beg for a bullet.”

“You? I hardly think so. You never developed the taste for violence. Even Uncle Vincent said you were a major disappointment.”

“Times have changed.”

“I want the five million, Vincent, all of it. I would have given you half had I found it, but since you succumbed to greed and kept it all for yourself, so shall I. And don’t bother to claim that you don’t have it. I know that you do.”

“I have it.”

“So, are you in a hurry to get your little darling away from me?”

“If you want to see any of the five million, you better make damn sure that neither you nor any of your flunkies lay a hand on her.”

“If you’re ready to talk business, she’ll be fine. If not, well, Vincent, you know I’m a patient man, and I’ve already been waiting almost fifteen years for this.”

“For the money you killed for?”

“I’m a Magilinti. I’ve killed for less.”

“I’ll talk business. For starters, the exchange will take place at a site of my choosing, and it will be just you, me and Kelly. None of your thugs are invited to the dance.”

“You don’t give the orders anymore, Vincent. Your daddy’s dead, and you never had any clout of your own.
